You're holding your camera lens up to the light, turning it slowly, and there it is: a faint rainbow sheen sweeping across the front element like oil catching sun on water. Your pulse quickens. You've read enough to know that lens coatings can fail, that moisture can bloom inside a sealed element, and that what you're seeing might mark the beginning of the end for this particular lens. What you're actually looking at is something else entirely, a sign the coating on your lens is doing exactly what it was built to do.

That shimmer on your lens is a completely normal optical signature, not a symptom of anything wrong with the glass underneath. The front element carries distinct bands of blue, green, and magenta that shift and trade places as you tilt the lens, a shimmer that moves with your hand rather than sitting still. Two lenses from the same production batch, held under the same light, can throw back noticeably different colors, one leaning violet where the other leans green, each a small variation set into that particular lens at the moment of manufacture rather than anything that's happened to it since. Nothing about this shimmer changes what your lens can actually do. The glass beneath it stays clear, sharp, and exactly as capable as it was the day it left the factory, still bending light the way it was designed to, in whatever hue that specific lens happens to throw back at you.

The distinction that actually matters with a lens like this is behavior, not color. A static, hazy patch on the lens that keeps its exact color and position no matter how you turn it looks nothing like this normal shimmer, and neither does a fine, spiderweb-like pattern etched into the coating, both of which stay fixed on the lens rather than shifting with the light. A mark on your lens that refuses to move is worth having someone who knows glass take a look at, while a mark that dances with every tilt of your hand almost never is. I haven't found a documented case study for distinguishing fine-coating iridescence from genuine optical damage in the material I've reviewed for this piece.
